The Chimney is pleased to present Endnotes, a group exhibition featuring works by Autumn Ahn, Setare Arashloo, Shahrzad Changalvaee, Kiran Chandra, Lizzy de Vita, Juliette Dumas, Andrew Erdos, Riitta Ikonen, Sara Mejia Kriendler, Yasue Maetake, Matt Taber and Gian Maria Tosatti. A work of art conceals many voices, historical dialogues, and inspirations. The creative process is layered but often remains veiled.
To celebrate The Chimney’s third anniversary, we wish to reveal the pantheon of writers, thinkers, and poets whose words have influenced the 12 artists presented in Endnotes. The exhibition creates a global conversation across time, countries, and disciplines featuring artists from Finland, France, Italy, Iran, India, Japan, Colombia and the United States. When we enter an artist’s studio, we seek hidden clues to better grasp his or her idiosyncratic world: preparatory studies on a wall, works from their artist friends, discarded trials that mingle with their everyday objects, and of course, their books. Books resting on their working tables, worn from overuse; books that once fed their imagination silently arranged in shelves waiting to be rediscovered; and books that reveal themselves to us through serendipitous conversations. For this exhibition, we have asked each artist to share their precious libraries - encyclopedias of fantasy, knowledge and wisdom - along with works that connect us to their literary selection.
The architectural topography conceived by Tomaz Azevedo Capobianco, transforms The Chimney into a hybrid and multi-leveled space – a mind map of the artists’ thoughts. This labyrinthine spatial arrangement offers the works and visitors both a communal and private living space with self-contained platforms on which one can sit, stand, read or discover the sculptures and works on paper.
Endnotes explores the timeless intersection of language and visual arts. A book seeds a thought and a thought inspires a work in a boundless cycle. Each visitor carries his/her own literary fields to the exhibition, ultimately expanding the synergic discussion between artists and authors to the audience. As one wanders through the multiplicity of dialogues, creativity unravels and one singular voice becomes plural.
